We, the undersigned are thoroughly opposed to the new planning proposal for a new Tesco store on the site currently occupied by Avalon Plastics on Beckery New Rd.
Jobs
We believe that the building of a new supermarket in the outskirts of Glastonbury will not create employment, or contribute to the economic success of this rural area, because of the negative impact it will have on local small businesses and the jobs supported by them.
Local Economy
We believe that Glastonbury is a thriving, bustling town with many independent shops and good outdoor markets which are of interest to citizens and tourists alike. If people are tempted to drive to Tescos, this will reduce the normal footfall levels which keep the High St alive. We have all seen the impact of Tescos on Shepton Mallet, for example, and we do not want that experience repeated here.
Environment
It is a known fact that supermarkets encourage people to use their cars. This will increase noise and pollution levels and make this town less desirable to live in, for children to play in and, most importantly for the local economy, less desirable to tourists.
